The Miracle of Burlon

S.H. Burlon

Update on the progress of S.H. Burlon, the magnificent Peruvian stallion and heir to some of the greatest Peruvian foundation bloodlines, who was rescued in May 2007.  This great miracle stallion survived years of living in a small unventilated brick stall, on filth and urine, dirty or no water and poor quality or often no food. Burlon did not succumb to depression, insanity, starvation or dehydration in his unbearable conditions.  He  is a testimony to survival and courage and his kind and gentle eyes tell everything about his great and loving heart.

Below are photographs of S.H. Burlon in April 2007 in Longmont, Colorado when Boulder resident and his rescuer, Rita Anderson, first saw S.H. Burlon and his 14 Peruvian friends starving and in squalor.

S. H. Burlon is a walking history of many of the greatest  foundation horses of the Peruvian breed, son and grandson of multiple champion, champion of champions, and Lauredo champions, A.E.V. Oro Negro and A.E.V. Regional.  Yet, Burlon, like the other 14 Peruvian horses trapped with him in squalor in a Colorado neglect case did not escape the wasting and other physical ramifications of years of poor feeding, little or no hoof care, no exercise, no grooming and no care of his teeth.  The veterinarian who cared for Burlon had never seen teeth in worse condition from neglect.

It took eight months for the stunning horse to fully recover, yet like all of his fellow Peruvians, Burlon’s great heart and love of life prevailed and today he is fully recovered physically and in spirit.  S.H. Burlon has been adopted by Dr. Pat Haight and her husband, Bill, and spends his days enjoying life with their other Peruvian horses including his cousin, Conquistador.  Burlon and Conquistador share many family qualities including a rich chestnut color, flowing manes and tails highlighted with blonde, beautiful gaits with much termino, great brio or heart and presence, the best appetites around and an uncanny ability to untie any knot on any was hrack or hitching post anywhere.    Amazingly, despite the lack of exercise, muscle wasting, malnourishment, and poor hoof care, Burlon shows no residual damage to his legs and, at 17 years old, is fully sound.  We were astounded at how his rich mahogany color was hidden beneath a filthy coat, dry from poor nourishment and how it returned in all its richness with just basic care.

Look for S.H. Burlon to join Conquistador and their rescued cousin, Hija de Sol y Luna (Sunrise) to bring the message of triumph over cruelty and neglect to upcoming shows and events.

Eleven of the Peruvians from this case have found their forever homes.  Through a grant from PetSmart Charities, the three remaining mares and the last gelding are receiving 3 months of professional training in preparation for adoption.  For information on adopting one of the Peruvians email: adoption@conquistadorprogram.org or telephone 480-232-8068.
