Peruvian Horses

In Arizona:
- PetsMart Charities who provided a grant
for all of the veterinary and farrier needs of
the Peruvians in Colorado and in Arizona.
- Blue Grass Arabians who provided foster care to nurse
back 4 of the stallions.
- Cliffrose Ranch and Rescue who will
provide a lifetime home for two of the older stallions, who because of
some arthritis, cannot be placed in adoptive homes.
- The Conquistador Equine Rescue & Advocacy Program
and their kind supporters – Is providing feed and supplements and
board for some of the horses
- Hacienda de los Milagros Animal Sanctuary in Chino Valley
who is providing a lifetime home for three of the mares.
- Luis Trujillo who provided his expertise in handling
the horses for the veterinarians and who is providing an adoptive home for
3 of the horses and provided a foster care home for one more.
- Dr. Andriana Stinnett who
provided veterinary care and her expertise in reporting the conditions of
4 of the horses.
- Dr. Gerry Longworth who
provided veterinary care and his expertise with Peruvians for the
Peruvians at Blue Grass Arabians.
- Claire Thompson farrier
extraordinaire who provided farrier care
- Jeannie Sullivan, Peruvian Paso breeder and lover,
working in the background helped Rita Anderson and Dr. Haight ask the
right questions, negotiate the adoptions, and made sure the best was done
for the Peruvians.
- Cody
Wilson and his assistant, Roberto, transporter extraordinaire who, as he
put it, leaped into the adventure of expertly and safely transporting 6
Peruvian stallions and 5 Peruvian mares in two trailers to Arizona.
In California:
- Juan Garayar, a leading trainer of Peruvians who adopted the
stallion, Hidalgo, and took two days from
his work in California to travel to Colorado to get the
horses trained to a halter and lead and ready for transport.
- In Defense of Animals who donated funds for the
transport of the Peruvians and for care.
- Hugh Richardson, Peruvian Paso breeder and judge who
traveled to Maricopa
County to offer his
assistance, expertise and homes if needed.
In Colorado
- Rita Anderson - Head Angel, the rescuer who managed to secure
the 11 Peruvians who came to Arizona and who got the Boulder County Prosecutor
involved to seek removal of the last four Peruvians, a feat that many had
tried to get done for 20 years – Rita accomplished it all with the
help of all the angels listed in five short weeks.
- Jay Hearst,
horseman and horse lover, who donated greatly to the rescue of the
Peruvians and whose generosity extended to raising additional funds
through other donations to help the Peruvians and who visited the barn to
be on stanby to help handle the horses for the
veterinarian.
- Julie
Hillyard, breeder and custodian of Peruvian
horses who went on to the property with the media to bring attention to
the plight of the Peruvians and who took in 3 of the horses and
donated hay and support to the
11 who came to Arizona and advocated for involvement by law enforcement.
- Sharon
La Pierre and her husband, David Bruce, Peruvian persons in Colorado who have
Peruvians including a baby they received through a rescue from the first
group of horses. Donated
toward the rescue of the 11 Peruvians, brought hay to the Peruvians,
guided Rita on supplies to request from PetsMart
Charities for the horses, and advocated for involvement by law
enforcement.
- Dr.
Nancy Loving who reduced her costs in order to get all of the horses their
Coggins tests, health certificates and worming
medication in Colorado.
- Mike
Wood , Peruvian breeder in Colorado who bravely worked with Julie Hillyard to bring feed to the Peruvians and to get the
Colorado
media involved risking trespassing charges with Julie in the process.
- PetsMart in Boulder, Colorado,
who, through Petsmart Charities, provided for
the needs of the horses with grooming supplies, electrolytes, fly spray,
halters, leads and a myriad of critically needed supplies for the horses
to the tune of two full shopping carts.
- The
Longmont Humane Society who generously contacted their own supporters for
help for the Peruvians.
- Dan Lisco, Sombrero Ranch manager, who loaned panels for a
round pen, provided help to get the most difficult horse Coggins tested, and who, with his hands, helped handle
the horses.
- Linda
Wise and her friend who contributed funds that made it possible for the
two older stallions, M.M. Machito and M.M. Figuroso, to be retired at Cliffrose
Ranch in Snowflake, AZ.
- Leslie
Irvine, Dana Hubbard, Colter Ellis, Jean Ash,
Sarah Florez who were Rita’s special
angels because they came in and willingly cleaned and mucked the layers of
manure and urine in the stalls, the worst job of all and they lovingly did
it for the horses. In
addition, Leslie Irvine and Dana Hubbard volunteered to feed the horses
many time.
- Scores
of anonymous kind Coloradoans who responded to emails for help and donated
funds for a bale of hay or a bag of shavings.
In New Mexico:
- A
Peruvian Paso breeder and ranch owner and board member of NAPHA, after
speaking with Dr. Pat Haight about the situation, put rescuers in touch
with each other by contacting Peruvian people in Colorado
and putting them in touch with Dr. Haight in Arizona.
In Texas:
- Donna
Bearer, Executive Director of the North American Peruvian Horse
Association (NAPHA) and Carolyn Wills of NAPHA who personally lent much
time and their expertise to guide the rescuers in what papers to secure
for the horses to assist in registration down the line.
In Utah:
- Best
Friends Animal Society who donated funds toward the transport of the
horses to Arizona
and who spread the word about the needs of the horses through their vast
Best Friends Network.
